2K Games has appointed Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to oversee the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently developing the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Brinkman steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the exit of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's lackluster initial reveal last fall.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer notified staff about this strategic move through an official communication, which highlighted that playtesting had shown the requirement for a distinct direction.

Ismailer stated that the developers is now overhauling the project with a renewed approach, aiming to satisfy player expectations.

Trend of Key Acquisitions

This announcement echoes a comparable step taken by the publisher in August, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to work on the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

I know you all just finished your gathering - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a update, I stated the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and creative designers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to endure.”

Given your hard work and adaptability, particularly over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.

The player input from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was revealing. It validated the promise of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had work to do. It revealed the requirement for a clearer vision.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the input to heart and reimagined Project ETHOS with a refreshed vision - one that’s ready to fulfill its ambition to our audience.

The trust in this project strengthens every day. To further the outstanding advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to announce the new hire as the new Lead of the team. After some time of discussions, Ben starts with us on the specified date.

His leadership and background in the PVP shooter field is vast, having devoted the last 15 years producing and overseeing some of the most recognizable titles in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, Apex Legends.

Brinkman currently holds the position of senior developer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously was employed at major gaming companies in multiple production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, before that, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

The upcoming game was unveiled in last year together with a public demo. At the time, the developers portrayed the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an innovative evolution on the genre."
